If you are building a new home in the Spartanburg or Greenville, South Carolina area that is beyond the municipal sewer system area, you will need to have a septic system installed to handle waste. There are four different types of septic systems and septic tanks that you can choose from. Each has advantages and disadvantages to consider.
There are more than a dozen different types of systems, and your contractor will be well-suited to tell you which is best for your area, soil condition, and regulations, as well as your budget. When it comes to the tank itself, there are three different material types that are used:
- Concrete septic tanks are the most common, and they are generally in the average price spectrum. A
well-crafted concrete tank can last many decades, but because there are many factors that can affect them, anything over a couple decades of use is considered good. The most common problem with concrete septic tanks is cracking and separation. The use of low-quality concrete can shorten their life considerably.
- Fiberglass and plastic septic tanks do not crack or corrode, making them a popular choice. However, they can become damaged more easily by soil shifts and anything heavy passing over them. A common problem is a plug at the bottom becoming dislodged. However, they are still beneficial because they are more resistant to chemicals than other types of
septic tanks.
- Aerobic septic tanks use oxygen to increase decomposition so pumping is not needed as often. They are quite a bit more costly than other systems and they need electricity to operate. They also need more maintenance. One of the benefits of these systems is that they usually require less space, which can be helpful on a smaller property.
